Alcohol use disorder can involve questions about withdrawal risk, detox, residential or outpatient treatment, medication options, relapse, family involvement, and what happens after the immediate crisis. The After Group helps Iowa individuals and families understand the options and connect with appropriate providers.
Alcohol detox and withdrawal management
Alcohol withdrawal can become medically serious. If someone has been drinking heavily or regularly, has a history of severe withdrawal, seizures, significant medical problems, or is using other substances or medications, a clinician may need to determine whether medically supervised withdrawal management or another level of care is appropriate.
I do not provide detoxification or medical assessment. I help identify qualified Iowa programs that can evaluate the situation and determine the appropriate level of care.

Medication treatment for alcohol use disorder
Medication treatment for alcohol use disorder is one of my strongest areas of expertise. Some people are specifically looking for medication for alcohol cravings or asking whether naltrexone or extended-release naltrexone (Vivitrol) may fit into treatment. I can help explain how medication treatment is incorporated into different Iowa programs and what questions to ask when choosing a provider.
I do not prescribe medication or determine whether a medication is appropriate. Prescribing and medical decisions remain with the treating clinician.
Choosing the level of care
Depending on the situation, the next step may involve detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), outpatient care, medication treatment, or a combination of services over time. I help narrow realistic options based on the person’s needs, treatment history, practical barriers, and what the treating provider recommends.
When timing matters, I can also help clarify availability, admission requirements, and what information a program needs before treatment can begin.
Treatment may address the alcohol use. Families and individuals may still need support around what comes next.
The After Group can continue beyond the immediate detox or treatment decision through Education & Guidance Sessions, Family Education & Support, Individual Education & Recovery Support, referral follow-through, post-treatment transition support, and customized ongoing private support.
