SUPPORT FOR YOUR FAMILY

Room to talk.
Help deciding.

You may disagree about treatment, feel unsure how to help or be trying to rebuild trust after a difficult stretch.

We can meet with you alone or with family members. Bring the conversations, decisions and everyday problems you need help working through.

WHAT CHANGES

Work on what
your family needs.

  • Understand the options

Talk through addiction, medication and treatment choices so you can ask informed questions.

  • Have difficult conversations

Prepare what you want to say, listen to each other and practice how to respond.

  • Make decisions together

Discuss money, transport, housing and other help in the context of your family’s actual circumstances.

  • Set boundaries you can maintain

Decide what you can offer, what you need to change and how to follow through.

  • Keep working as things change

Review what is helping after a new appointment, treatment decision, return home or setback.

YOUR PART

Help you can
keep offering.

Supporting someone can include encouragement, practical help and limits. We’ll work out what each looks like in your situation.

The aim is for you to understand your choices and feel more capable making them. Your own wellbeing belongs in the conversation.

WHERE THIS CAN LEAD

You can begin
without them.

Start with your own appointment. If treatment becomes an option, I can help prepare the family, contact programs and arrange admission.

A FEW QUESTIONS

What families
ask me.

Does my loved one need to know I called?

You can begin with a private conversation about your own situation. We’ll discuss consent and communication before involving anyone else.

Will you tell me to cut them off?

We’ll work out boundaries you can hold in your actual situation. I won’t hand you a rule and leave you to figure out how to live with it.

Do you work with both partners and parents?

Yes. Parents, partners and other adult family members can get help with their own role and decisions.

What can I do if my adult child refuses addiction treatment?

Decide what help you’ll offer, what you’ll stop paying for and how you’ll respond to the next request. We can prepare that conversation and discuss treatment options.

How do I stop giving money without abandoning them?

We’ll separate the help you want to offer from the things you can’t keep covering. Then we’ll make the boundary specific and practice how you’ll say it. Your situation matters more than somebody else’s blanket rule.

Can you help when my partner keeps drinking and breaking promises?

Yes. We can talk through what keeps happening, what you need and which decisions belong to you. We’ll work on a response you can follow instead of starting the same argument again.

Can I get family addiction support in Des Moines if my loved one refuses help?

Yes. Meet in person in Des Moines or Central Iowa, or by phone or video across Iowa. We can work on your decisions without requiring your loved one to attend.

What happens when they come home from treatment?

We can work on expectations at home, money, appointments, communication and how to respond if things change. The family still needs attention after the treatment stay ends.

There is an after.

You don’t have to figure it all out
before you call.

A free, private 20-minute conversation.
