Your own
footing.
First we work on it together. Then you make more of the calls, hold the boundary and follow through yourself. Support changes as you do.
“Meet them where they’re at. Change the goal so the next one is achievable.”
Jessica Clark · Founder, The After Group
Understand it.
Practice it.
Use it.
01Understand+
Tell me what’s happening, what you want to change and what’s in the way. We work out where to start and one thing you can actually do.
IN EVERYDAY LIFEA parent gets clear about what help they’ll offer. An adult chooses an appointment they’re willing to make.
02Practice together+
We make the next goal doable. Have the conversation. Make the appointment. Pay the bill. Then we look at what happened and build from there.
IN EVERYDAY LIFEPractice what you’ll say before the next request for money. Make the provider call together.
03Take the lead+
You make more of the calls and decisions yourself. You use the tools we’ve practiced. I’m still there to work through what gets difficult.
IN EVERYDAY LIFEYou hold the boundary, attend the appointment or complete the goal, then bring back what you learned.
04Use support deliberately+
You know what you can handle and when to ask for help. We review how much involvement you need, including the care you continue with other professionals.
IN EVERYDAY LIFEYou ask for help with a difficult transition without handing over every decision.
Doing, not just saying.
Keeping an appointment, paying a bill, seeing your kids or getting back to work gives us something concrete to review.
We name what worked and practice what still needs attention. You take on more of the decisions as you’re ready.
Change the goal.
Keep the relationship.
If the goal was too big, we make it smaller. We check what got in the way: the routine, relationship, environment or missing tool.
There is no timetable for completing the model. We return to the part that needs work when circumstances change.
How the model
works in life.
What are the four parts of The After Model?+
Understand. Practice together. Take the lead. Use support deliberately. We start with what’s happening, work on something doable and keep moving more of the decisions and follow-through into your hands.
Is The After Model a fixed treatment program?+
No. It describes how we work together. You aren’t required to complete levels on a timetable, and it doesn’t replace medical care or a treatment program you need.
What counts as progress?+
Doing the thing you chose: making the appointment, holding a boundary, applying for work, showering or opening a bill. We notice those steps and decide what comes next.
What happens when a goal is too difficult?+
We change the goal so the next one is achievable. We look at the routines, relationships, environment or tools that got in the way and practice again.
How does the model apply to parents and partners?+
We work toward a family that understands what’s happening, knows its options and feels secure making decisions. Over time, you should need less direction from me.
There is an after.
