FOR MOMS
When your adult child’s substance use is running your life, you need a plan too.
Private, practical support for Iowa moms trying to help an adult son or daughter through addiction, substance use, treatment decisions, relapse, or repeated crises without losing themselves in the process.
You may be dealing with requests for money or housing, broken agreements, an OWI or drug charge, treatment refusal, relapse, or the exhausting question of how much help is actually helping. You do not need another lecture about “setting boundaries.” You need to decide what those boundaries are, communicate them clearly, and know what you will do when they are tested.
You can love them without managing everything for them.
When substance use affects your family, it is easy to become the person solving every problem: making calls, paying bills, finding treatment, covering consequences, smoothing things over, and trying to prevent the next crisis. Over time, the line between support and over-functioning can become hard to see.
My role is to help you slow the situation down, separate what is yours from what is theirs, and build a response you can actually follow when emotions are high.
What we can work on together
- Clear limits around money, housing, transportation, and other support
- Preparing for difficult conversations before they happen
- Responding to anger, guilt, pressure, manipulation, or repeated promises
- Deciding what help you are willing to offer — and what you are no longer willing to do
- Understanding treatment options and what questions to ask
- Making sense of what may come next after an OWI or drug charge
- Preparing for relapse, discharge, or a return home
- Creating a family plan that does not depend on controlling someone else’s behavior
This may be the right fit if
- You are constantly waiting for the next crisis
- You keep changing the boundary because enforcing it feels unbearable
- Your adult child refuses treatment or says they can handle it on their own
- You are unsure whether helping is protecting them from consequences
- Your family disagrees about what to do
- You are exhausted from being the person everyone calls when something goes wrong
When treatment becomes part of the decision
You may know treatment is needed and still have no idea what kind, where to call, whether detox is necessary, or how medication treatment fits into the picture. I can help you understand the options and identify appropriate Iowa providers without making you become the treatment coordinator for the entire family.

Boundaries that hold up under pressure
A boundary is not a threat, punishment, or way to force someone into recovery. It is a decision about what you will participate in, provide, allow, or do next.
We can turn vague ideas like “I need to stop enabling” into specific decisions: what changes, what you will say, what exceptions you will not make in the moment, and how you will respond when the pushback comes.
Experienced guidance without another system to manage
I bring nearly 20 years of experience across substance-use treatment, families, recovery systems, relapse, behavior change, and the difficult decisions that happen outside a formal program. The goal is not to tell you how to parent your adult child. It is to help you think clearly, make informed decisions, and follow through on the plan you choose.
This is individualized family guidance and decision support. It is not psychotherapy, legal advice, emergency response, or a substitute for licensed treatment or medical care.
Family Education & Support can continue as the situation changes.
You may first reach out because you need help finding treatment. The work may continue through an Education & Guidance Session, family education, boundary and communication planning, discharge or return-home preparation, relapse, and customized ongoing private support when one decision leads to the next.
Tell me what’s happening. We’ll start there.
You do not need to solve everything today. Tell me what is happening, what has already been tried, and where you feel stuck. We can start with the decision in front of you.
